* **the*well*fair*shop Committee of the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board is holding a coffee morning in celebration of the life of one of its founder members, Jonathan Dorman, who died earlier this year after a short illness.  The coffee morning, which will be attended by his wife, Pamela and mother Sylvia, will be held on Sunday December 4th at the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Community Centre at 11am, when a leaf on the Tree of Life will be unveiled in his memory.

Flaming Fantastic

LJWB Receives Royal Seal of Approval

Leeds Jewish Welfare Board was one of 30 organisations to receive an award from the Duke of York at The Duke of York’s Community Initiative annual award ceremony on 11 October.   The ceremony took place at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate where the Duke of York presented the Awards personally to Yorkshire organisations that have transformed the lives of their community.

Afternoon Tea in the Conservatory

The first demenia cafe, *'Conservatory D'Caf'* set up by Leeds Jewish Welfare Board, in conjunction with the Alzheimers Society, opened its doors at the MAZCC on 28th June. The café, run by trained volunteers and health care professionals, opened to the Community to provide advice and support for people affected by dementia and their carers.

Hannah makes a Splash for LJWB

LJWB Fundraising Co-ordinator Hannah Levey, a keen swimmer, participated in the Great North Swim on Sunday 19th June. The Great North Swim, took place at Lake Windemere in The Lake District and is the biggest swimming event ever to be staged in Britain.  10,000 participants  took part over three days with swimmers setting off in waves of approximately 300 every half an hour. The challenge was to swim a mile in open water which is the equivalent of 60 lengths of a 25m pool.  “The conditions were in my favour”,  said Hannah, “the water temperature was a tropical 16.4 degrees and I managed to complete the course in 54mins and 9 seconds”. “Although I wasn’t the fastest I did manage to raise over £1000 for LJWB and Macmillan Cancer Support, which is something I am exceedingly proud of.” “Next year my aim is to beat both my time and the amount I raised.”

LJWB will be holding a Supporter Event on Thursday 30th June at 5.30pm. This is an opportunity for us to thank our Supporters and to share how the Welfare Board helps people across the Community through our wide range of care services. The importance of Legacy Giving will be a focus during the event. Gifts from peoples' Wills are vital for our income and enable us to secure the future of Jewish social care in Leeds for generations to come.

Remember Your Loved Ones with 'The Tree of Life'

A 'Tree of Life' was launched on 22 May at the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Community Centre. The Tree of Life has detachable leaves which can be engraved with words in memory of loved ones and attached to the tree. The tree was unveiled by family and friends of the Rosenhead family who attached the first leaf in memory of Andrew Rosenhead, who passed away in 2010. The leaves will hang on the tree permanently providing a lasting tribute. Leaves will cost £365. For details contact Fundraising Manager Meirav Sasson on 0113 2185848.

Summer Fun for all

Fun was had by all at the LJWB Annual Summer Fair on Sunday. A traditional steel band provided fantastic background music whilst approximately 400 people enjoyed the wide range of games, activities, workshops and food on offer. The Scouts & Guides set up a variety of stalls including apple bobbing and sponge throwing which proved very popular. The Fair was another successful event from LJWB bringing together Community members of all ages and raising £3500 for vital Community Services. A big thank you goes to our Guests of Honour Talia & Ryan Sussman, Child Presenter Sapphire Mack and our event sponsors Pharmacy 2 u, appliancesdirect.co.uk and bambinodirect.

Praise for London Marathon Runners

Leeds Jewish Welfare Board London Marathon runners Lloyd Rakusen, Jo Grainger, Sarah Smith and Martin Browne were praised by LJWB President Edward Ziff at a 'thank you' brunch on Sunday. Edward, along with Fundraisng Chairman Jonathan Straight and Chief Executive Rebecca Weinberg thanked and praised this years marathon runners who handed over a cheque of £5000 to LJWB.

Run For Your Life

Veteran marathon runner Lloyd Rakusen, 63, took part in his 9th London Marathon to raise funds for LJWB. Lloyd was motivated to participate in Marathons after his son Joe's death in a car crash in 2001 and enjoys the fitness aspect of running. He also feels it is important to set yourself challenges and aims each year to raise more money than last. This year Lloyd who completed the course in 04.44.20 hours was joined by runners Susanna Domeniconi, Simon Buckden, Jo Grainger, Kim Copitch, Martin Brown & Sarah Smith. All runners completed the gruelling 26 mile course raising a combined total of pproximately £5000. LJWB would like to give their grateful thanks to all those who took part.

 The Diana Nelson Art Award will take place on Sunday 15th May at the MAZCC. The annual award will be attended by Martin Nelson who holds the event in memory of his late wife Diana who was an acclaimed artist, working and inspiring people of all ages and ability.

Gale Trophy Bridge Evening

The second annual Gale Trophy bridge evening held at the MAZCC on Sunday 20th December was another great success.  Over 65 people attended the event despite sub-zero temperatures and icy conditions. £1000 was raised for LJWB projects. Mike Surr  and Peter Doerfler were this years trophy winners.

Rock N Roll Night

Elayne Peters repeated the success of her last 60’s rock n’ roll night with a Rock N Roll extravaganza on Sunday night at the MAZCC.  Cabaret singers Wendy King and Rod Brooks along with a backing group entertained a packed venue. The crowd were on their feet dancing and singing along to old favourites. The evening was a great success and raised over £3000 for projects at LJWB
