The first demenia cafe, *'Conservatory D'Caf'* set up by Leeds Jewish Welfare Board, in conjunction with the Alzheimers Society, opened its doors at the MAZCC on 28th June. The café, run by trained volunteers and health care professionals, opened to the Community to provide advice and support for people affected by dementia and their carers.
read more >LJWB Fundraising Co-ordinator Hannah Levey, a keen swimmer, participated in the Great North Swim on Sunday 19th June. The Great North Swim, took place at Lake Windemere in The Lake District and is the biggest swimming event ever to be staged in Britain. 10,000 participants took part over three days with swimmers setting off in waves of approximately 300 every half an hour. The challenge was to swim a mile in open water which is the equivalent of 60 lengths of a 25m pool. “The conditions were in my favour”, said Hannah, “the water temperature was a tropical 16.4 degrees and I managed to complete the course in 54mins and 9 seconds”. “Although I wasn’t the fastest I did manage to raise over £1000 for LJWB and Macmillan Cancer Support, which is something I am exceedingly proud of.” “Next year my aim is to beat both my time and the amount I raised.”

A 'Tree of Life' was launched on 22 May at the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Community Centre. The Tree of Life has detachable leaves which can be engraved with words in memory of loved ones and attached to the tree. The tree was unveiled by family and friends of the Rosenhead family who attached the first leaf in memory of Andrew Rosenhead, who passed away in 2010. The leaves will hang on the tree permanently providing a lasting tribute. Leaves will cost £365. For details contact Fundraising Manager Meirav Sasson on 0113 2185848.

A traditional steel band provided fantastic background music whilst approximately 400 people enjoyed the wide range of games, activities, workshops and food on offer. The Scouts & Guides set up a variety of stalls including apple bobbing and sponge throwing which proved very popular. The Fair was another successful event from LJWB bringing together Community members of all ages and raising £3500 for vital Community Services. read more >Veteran marathon runner Lloyd Rakusen, 63, took part in his 9th London Marathon to raise funds for LJWB. Lloyd was motivated to participate in Marathons after his son Joe's death in a car crash in 2001 and enjoys the fitness aspect of running. He also feels it is important to set yourself challenges and aims each year to raise more money than last. This year Lloyd who completed the course in 04.44.20 hours was joined by runners Susanna Domeniconi, Simon Buckden, Jo Grainger, Kim Copitch, Martin Brown & Sarah Smith. All runners completed the gruelling 26 mile course raising a combined total of pproximately £5000. LJWB would like to give their grateful thanks to all those who took part.
