Afternoon Tea in the Conservatory

The first demenia cafe, 'Conservatory D'Caf' set up by Leeds Jewish Welfare Board, in conjunction with the Alzheimers Society, opened its doors at the MAZCC on 28th June. The café, run by trained volunteers and health care professionals, opened to the Community to provide advice and support for people affected by dementia and their carers.

The first cafe, serving traditional afternoon tea,  was a great success with 20 dementia sufferers and their carers enjoying the relaxed cafe atmosphere and meeting new friends.

Café organiser, Anita Johnson, a member of LJWB’s Moorcare Community Service Team, said, "dementia cafes have sprung up over the last few years, to meet the needs of carers and people with dementia.  We hoped to create an old fashioned café atmosphere, a relaxed environment where people with dementia and their carers can share their experiences.

"We are really pleased with how well the initial 'Conservatory D'Caf' was recieved", said Anita, "the atmosphere was really great and we are looking forward to the next date on 26th July. It is intended that future dates will include reminiscence sessions and singalongs."
