Mrs S's Story

Mrs S, aged 94, was referred to the older people’s services team in 2006 after her husband had died. She was absolutely devastated by this loss as they had been married for 70 years and had been together since the age of 18. Their only child has lived in Australia for many years.

When our social worker visited she identified that Mrs S needed a lot of help, most of which was declined as Mrs S felt that she could manage alone.

Our social worker kept in touch by phone.  In 2008 Mrs S was burgled and she became incredibly frightened.

Our social worker continued to support Mrs S who finally agreed that she would be happier and safer living in sheltered accommodation and, with her permission, a referral to Leeds Jewish Housing Association was made. She was eventually rehoused with our social worker’s support. Mrs S has now agreed to have help from Moorcare and other services to help her maintain her independence.

Mrs S’s quality of life has been enhanced by being able to access the Hub activities at the Marjorie & Arnold Ziff Community Centre, where she particularly enjoys attending the keep fit class and discussion group. Mrs S has discovered that she knows many people who attend the Centre and she is also able to enjoy a hot meal with her friends whilst she is there.

Mrs S knows that, should she need it, help is now readily available and admits that she made the right decision to move.
